The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a directive for U.S. federal agencies to address a new security flaw within Fortinet's FortiWeb web application firewall.

This vulnerability, known as CVE-2025-58034, relates to an OS command injection issue that could enable authorized threat actors to run root-level commands with minimal effort and without needing user interaction.

Fortinet elaborated on the nature of this vulnerability, describing its origin as stemming from an improper handling of certain elements used in OS command inputs. They indicated that crafted HTTP requests or command-line instructions could be used by an authenticated attacker to gain unauthorized code execution on the affected systems.

The Trend Micro research team, which identified the flaw, noted that the problem is specifically linked to the policy_scripting_post_handler method within FortiWeb’s implementation. The absence of adequate validation of user-provided strings before executing system calls is the core of the issue, leading to the potential for root-level code execution.

On the same day, CISA classified CVE-2025-58034 within its known exploited vulnerabilities catalog. It mandated that all federal civilian executive branch agencies must fix their systems by November 25th to protect against potential threats, as outlined in the Binding Operational Directive 22-01.

CISA also expressed concerns about this type of vulnerability being a common target for cybercriminals, emphasizing the heightened threat it poses to federal operations.

The agency has introduced a one-week deadline for remediation due to ongoing exploitation events, particularly in light of another vulnerability in FortiWeb (CVE-2025-64446) that has also been targeted in zero-day attacks, which Fortinet discreetly addressed in late October.

CISA has included the CVE-2025-64446 vulnerability in its list of actively exploited flaws, instructing federal entities to complete the necessary patches by November 21st.

BleepingComputer has reached out to Fortinet for further clarification regarding these vulnerabilities but has not yet received a reply.

Previously, in August, Fortinet tackled a similar command injection vulnerability (CVE-2025-25256) within its FortiSIEM solution, prompted by a Greynoise report highlighting an upsurge in brute-force attacks aimed at Fortinet's SSL VPNs.

The vulnerabilities associated with Fortinet products are often leveraged in cyber espionage and ransomware attacks. In February, it was disclosed that a hacking group identified as Volt Typhoon managed to exploit two FortiOS SSL VPN weaknesses to infiltrate a Dutch Ministry of Defence network, utilizing a specific remote access trojan dubbed Coathanger.
