Impact of Population Control Programs on Fertility Services
India has always practiced family planning to address its overgrown population and constantly increasing population rate. Anti-natal policies such as the family planning, free contraceptives, and sterilization campaigns by government have helped in checking the population growth. However, because of unchanging nature of social roles, increasing incidence of lifestyle related infertility, and increasing age of women during childbirth there has been a shift. While people are being controlled in terms of numbers, authorities are now focusing on another issue, which is infertility.
Details of Population Control Programmes in India, in December 2024
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the budget proposed by states in the Programme Implementation Plan (PIP), based on their specific needs to manage fertility.
India achieved a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0 as per NFHS-5 (2019–21). This is aligned with the National Population Policy 2000 and the National Health Policy 2017 (TFR of 2.1).
Various schemes implemented by the Government under Family Planning programme are given below:
Expanded Contraceptive Choices, comprises of Condoms, combined oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptive pills, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and sterilization are provided to the beneficiaries. The Contraceptive basket has also been expanded with new contraceptives, namely Injectable contraceptive MPA (Antara Programme) and Centchroman (Chhaya).
Mission Parivar Vikas is implemented in seven high-focussed states and six North-Eastern states to improve access to contraceptives and family planning services.
Compensation scheme for sterilization acceptors is provided to beneficiaries to compensate for the loss of wages incurred.
Post-pregnancy contraception in the form of Post-Partum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUCD), Post-Abortion Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PAIUCD), and Post-partum Sterilization (PPS) is provided to beneficiaries.
‘World Population Day Campaign’ and ‘Vasectomy Fortnight’ are observed every year to boost awareness on Family Planning and service delivery across all States/ Union Territories.
Home Delivery of Contraceptives Scheme by ASHAs.
Family Planning Logistics Management Information System (FP-LMIS) is in place for the management of family planning commodities at all levels of health facilities.
Cryobank Expansion: Revolutionizing Fertility Preservation
Cryo banks are involved in preservation of sperms, ovary and testicular tissue, storage of sperm and Eggs and freezing and preservation of embryos for those who have fertility issues or those who are postponing child bearing.
The growing demand for egg and sperm donation has also contributed towards the constantly rising market for cryobanking services in India. Most fertility clinics are nowadays developing new laboratories for cryopreservation with high levels of security and efficient screens.
As more companies offer insurance coverage to their employees for egg freezing, there is a gradual increase of women deciding to freeze their eggs for use in future. This is well observed especially in the population group of working people and patients undergoing treatment for cancer that would otherwise affect their fertility.
Cryobanks are also assisting donor programs to meet the requirements of couples who need donated gametes for reasons of medical condition.
In addition, procedures of vitrification have enhanced chances of implantation of frozen embryo and therefore, fertility has been enhanced in this aspect. Presently, government rules have put in place high measures in the Cryobank sector to facilitate more trust in the field and funds for the cryopreservation systems.
AI-Driven Innovations: Transforming India’s Fertility Landscape
AI is playing a very significant role in fertility treatments because they provide a better accuracy, quickness, and effectiveness. The application of artificial intelligence in IVF, selection of proper embryos, and personalized treatment strategy has enhanced the results in patients’ treatment drastically.
Application of computer technology around machine learning can identify the best matching embryos for implantation, thus reducing the number of failures in the cycle.
Another advancement is AI in melded with telemedicine and fertility apps, through which it is possible to have an online appointment with a doctor, track one’s health state, and receive individualized recommendations on further actions. AI will help to improve treatments rates, shorten the length of the process, and lower the cost of ART services making it readily accessible in the India fertility sector.
For instance, in November 2024, SpOvum announced the launch of its advanced AI-powered platform, SpOvum ARTGPT, aimed at revolutionizing patient interaction in the field of assisted reproductive technology (ART). This way the ARTGPT incorporates natural language processing (NLP) whereby the patient always receives instant conversational answers outside clinic practice. Regarding the multilingual support, the SpOvum ARTGPT can be utilized by a broad number of users across India owing to compatibility with Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and other languages.
In October 2022, Bloom IVF Group started using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology across its clinics, helping patients get pregnant faster and affordably. The group has its clinics in Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram, Indore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Navi Mumbai. Life Whisperer, the AI system from Presagen that Bloom IVF has deployed, analyzes the images of patient embryos. The system assesses the quality of the embryos, helping the embryologist identify the embryo that will most likely lead to a successful outcome.
