On March 30, 2021, we shared our commitment to sustainability and outlined our climate goals in a dedicated update.

As Netflix continues to bring stories that resonate personally or open windows into diverse cultures worldwide, our streaming service relies heavily on energy-intensive infrastructure. Since our last report, we've observed changes in our energy footprint, prompting us to provide the latest insights.

Our pledge to minimize environmental impact begins with our direct energy consumption—covering our offices and distribution centers. We actively reduce usage and ensure that 100% of the electricity we directly consume is matched with regional renewable energy certificates (RECs). In 2018, our direct energy use was approximately 51,000 megawatt-hours (MWh).

However, a significant portion of energy use stems from indirect sources—namely, the data centers and networks operated by partners like Amazon Web Services and Internet Service Providers. Although we have limited control over this indirect energy, we strive to influence sustainability through collaboration. We work with these partners to measure, report, and offset their electricity consumption by purchasing RECs and carbon offsets, which totaled around 194,000 MWh in 2018.

Our renewable energy investments span multiple regions, with projects across 23 U.S. states and 16 countries worldwide, including:

  • Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia
  • Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota
  • Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New England, New Mexico
  • North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland
  • South Dakota, Texas, Utah

Internationally, our initiatives extend to countries such as:

  • Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China
  • Colombia, Iceland, India, Japan, Malaysia
  • Taiwan, Thailand

While these efforts align with our current scale, we recognize we are at the beginning of our sustainability journey. We continuously evaluate our environmental impact and seek new opportunities to enhance our efforts. Presently, we participate in the EPA’s Green Power Partner program to track and report our progress.

Beyond renewable energy projects, we aim to operate sustainably through various practices—using compostable products, donating surplus food, and reducing single-use plastics. We also encourage our employees to adopt sustainable habits at home and in their communities.

Ultimately, our motivation stems from the inspiring storytellers who promote sustainability values through our platform, reaching audiences worldwide. We are grateful for the collaborative efforts of our partners and industry peers, who help push us toward a more sustainable future.

There is still much work ahead, and we are motivated by the collective progress being made every day.
