DVD Awards Celebration 2003

A celebration of home video excellence took shape early in 2003, as nominees were announced for an annual event honoring the best in DVD releases. Leading the pack among special edition releases was the extended cut of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," which earned six nominations in various categories. Director Peter Jackson secured two personal nods — one for his contributions to new and extended scenes incorporated into the film, and another for his audio commentary track. In recognition of his broader contributions to the format, Jackson was set to receive an inaugural honorary director focus award at the event.

Not far behind, the animated sequel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II" claimed a remarkable twelve nominations, standing out as the most-nominated title overall. Among those recognized were Jennifer Love Hewitt for an original song, and a roster of voice performers including Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, and Michael McKean for their contributions to animated character performances.

Nine nominations went to "Gang Tapes," directed by Adam Ripp — a film that had only recently arrived in video stores following its earlier recognition at the New York Underground Film Festival.

The evening's host was set to be Ben Stein, with entertainment provided by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Solomon Burke. Special guests were expected to include Quentin Tarantino, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Among the acting nominees, Campbell Scott earned a best actor nod for his role in the Lions Gate DVD premiere film "Lush," alongside co-star Laura Linney. This recognition followed earlier honors Scott had received from the National Board of Review and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for a separate project. Peter O'Toole and Joan Plowright received acting nominations for their performances in "Rock My World," while Gary Sinise was nominated for his role in "A Gentleman's Game."

On the directing side, Tom DiCillo earned a best director nomination for "Double Whammy," a film he both wrote and directed, which starred Denis Leary, Elizabeth Hurley, and Steve Buscemi.

The audio commentary category proved especially competitive, bringing together a remarkable cross-section of filmmakers and performers. Among those nominated were Cameron Crowe, Miloš Forman, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Zemeckis, the Coen Brothers, Billy Bob Thornton, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, and Matt Damon, alongside the cast of "Lord of the Rings," including Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, and Elijah Wood.

Michael Bay's director's cut of "Pearl Harbor" gathered four nominations, while Anjelica Huston received recognition for her voice performance in the computer-animated production "Barbie as Rapunzel."

The nominations were drawn from a pool of more than 500 eligible titles, rated by approximately 500 academy members who submitted over 100,000 individual ratings throughout the year. The final tally produced 225 nominees spread across 23 distinct categories.

A separate award, presented in partnership with AOL Movies, was to be determined through an online consumer poll focused on favorite DVD special editions of the year, with winners announced at the same January ceremony.
