Warner Home Video has entered into a new licensing agreement with CinemaNow, an internet video-on-demand platform, making it the first instance where the studio has permitted its films to be downloaded directly to consumers' personal computers.

Among the initial titles set to be made available is the wildly popular "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

Jeffrey Calman, who serves as Executive Vice President of VOD and Pay-Per-View for Warner Bros., described the arrangement as a brief, trial-based deal. Details regarding the number of titles included or the duration of the agreement were not disclosed by Calman.

Warner Bros. is among five major studios participating in a groundbreaking internet VOD joint venture known as Movielink, which is anticipated to launch within the coming weeks. Movielink has also announced a significant partnership with IBM, which will oversee systems operations and network management for the service. Studios participating in Movielink have consistently maintained that their content contributions to the platform would remain non-exclusive.

Through the CinemaNow platform, Warner will offer both newly released and catalog titles during standard pay-per-view windows. New releases will be priced at $3.99, while library titles will be available for $2.99, with both options granting a 24-hour viewing window. Once the 24-hour period expires, the downloaded files will become inaccessible on users' hard drives.

Calman expressed confidence in CinemaNow's capabilities, noting that thorough evaluation of their technology had taken place and that continued collaboration could be on the horizon if the partnership proves successful. He also clarified that the deal in no way impacts Warner's commitment to Movielink.
