A Romanian individual responsible for orchestrating a significant online swatting operation has been sentenced to four years in federal prison.

This operation aimed at over 75 public figures including government officials, journalists, and religious institutions, employed severe harassment tactics known as swatting.

Swatting involves making false emergency reports about life-threatening situations to provoke immediate and armed police intervention at the target's location.

Thomaz Szabo, aged 27, was extradited from Romania to the U.S. in November 2024. After pleading guilty in June 2025 to conspiracy and explosives-related threats, he was also placed under three years of supervised release.

Using numerous online pseudonyms like “Jonah,” “War Lord,” and “Cypher,” Szabo created a network responsible for a string of bomb threats and swatting incidents starting in late 2020.

Court records detail Szabo’s direct involvement in alarming incidents, such as a December 2020 threat of a mass shooting at synagogues in New York and a January 2021 threat involving explosives aimed at the U.S. Capitol, including a threat to assassinate then-President-elect Joe Biden.

U.S. Attorney Pirro commented on the gravity of Szabo’s actions, underscoring that he and his network targeted a range of individuals, from lawmakers to journalists, aimed at triggering armed interventions at their residences.

In the wake of Szabo’s encouragement, an aggressive pattern of swatting emerged, affecting around 25 congressional members and senior executive officials between December 2023 and early 2024.

Szabo's group was also involved in targeting many senior law enforcement personnel, state officials, and religious organizations during this time period.

One individual from his circle claimed to have executed over 25 swatting incidents in just one day, highlighting the extensive waste of taxpayer resources estimated at over $500,000 in two days.

Nemanja Radovanovic, a Serbian accomplice of Szabo, has also been implicated in these activities, facing legal action of his own as of August 2024.

FBI Special Agent Michael Burgwald stated that the relentless swatting tactics employed by Szabo and his associates led to significant waste of law enforcement resources and endangered the lives of innocent individuals.
