INNOVATION IN AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

CFM has been continuously investing in R&D pushing the development of hybrid electrical propulsion, advanced materials, and digital integration. Technologies include 3D printing, advanced ceramics, and performance and usage enhancement tools for improvement in performance and operations.

In April 2024, CFM International developed and delivered LEAP-1A engines outfitted with its new reverse bleed system (RBS) to Airbus. The LEAP-1A engine with a new RBS system, which mitigates carbon build-up on fuel nozzles, was certified by the FAA and EASA in 2023. As a result, the requirement for on-wing fuel nozzle replacement and associated maintenance burden will be dramatically reduced.

In April 2024 CFM Internation advances leap engine health monitoring through machine learning to provide operators with more accurate insights than ever before. The system now being used for CFM LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines models data from multiple engine sensors at take-off, climb, and cruise via probabilistic diagnostic and prognostic machine learning tools. These tools then provide targeted alerts based on known engine operating signatures. The operational models being generated are the most accurate the company has seen to date and are resulting in earlier detection of potential issues.

EXPANDING GLOBAL STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND EXPANSION

Some of the regions that CFM has worked with the airlines, MROs, and aviation companies include global market coverage. LEAP engine is over 10,000 and CFM has achieved a great market share and operational excellence.

In July 2024, Macquarie AirFinance finalized an agreement for 20 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft powered by 40 LEAP-1B engines. The company manages a fleet of more than 160 CFM-powered aircraft in service today, including both CFM56-powered Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320ceo family aircraft and LEAP-powered 737 MAX 8 and A320neo aircraft

In July 2022, Delta Air Lines ordered CFM International LEAP-1B engines to power its new fleet of Boeing 737 10 aircraft announced earlier today.  The order includes additional spare engines and an option to purchase up to 60 additional engines. These next-generation engines offer advantages in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and daily utilization that are central to our ongoing effort to streamline and elevate Delta’s fleet.

In March 2024, American Airlines, one of the world’s largest airlines finalized various agreements with CFM International for LEAP-1B engines to power the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10 fleet. The agreement includes the purchase of spare engines, including a new 20-year service agreement covering America’s existing and new LEAP-1B engines.

In July 2024, Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC), a global leader in aircraft leasing, today announced an order for ten LEAP-1A engines to power five Airbus A321neo family aircraft. The agreement also includes options for two additional LEAP-powered A321neo family aircraft.

GROWING DEMAND FOR LEAP ENGINE ORDERS

The demand for orders for LEAP engines has been rising steadily because of the high demand by popular international airlines and aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. Over 10,000 orders across the globe have been received by these LEAP engines due to their excellence in efficiency and their environmentally friendly capabilities as well as their costs. The orders are anticipated to go even higher as the aviation segment moves toward sustainability, SAF uptake alongside the company’s focus on advanced propulsion that is responsive to current and emerging aviation standards.

In July 2024, Avolon, a leading global aviation finance company, announced an order for 150 LEAP-1A engines to power 75 new Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The agreement also includes purchase rights for 150 additional LEAP-1A engines. Some of the major orders that have been placed by various airlines are mentioned above.

In February 2024, China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited (CALC) selected CFM International’s LEAP-1A engine to power an additional fleet of 20 Airbus A320neo and A321neo family aircraft.

In January 2024, Akasa Air and CFM International announced an agreement to purchase CFM LEAP-1B engines to power 150 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes, the sale of which was announced last week. The agreement also includes spare engines and a services contract.

In January 2024, Easy Jet, a leading European carrier placed an order for CFM LEAP-1A engines to power a fleet of 157 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, including 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo, which will be delivered from 2029, along with spare engines and a multi-year services agreement.

Some of the major orders that have been placed by airlines are mentioned above. The orders are not exhaustive but a part trying to showcase how LEAP Engine is going to change the landscape of the aviation industry.

CONCLUSION

The global market position of Global Engine Companies (GEC) such as CFM International is, therefore, underpinned by its technological leadership in green aviation, digitalization, and geographical reach. The need for high-efficiency overall engines and sustainable technologies in the aviation industry offers more opportunities for CFM to take charge.
